Get Your Fix! / Free Spay and Neuters for Pit Bull and Rottweilers / A Rotta Love Plus

A Rotta Love Plus  ~ Get Your Fix!

Free Spays and Neuters for Pit  Bulls and Rottweilers

Get Your Fix! aims to reduce the number of homeless and abandoned pets in our community by providing free spays and neuters to pit bulls and Rottweilers. The overall goal is to reduce the number of pit bulls and Rottweilers in local animal controls that are euthanized due to pet overpopulation. We know that proactive spay/neuter programs are the only way to end pet overpopulation, especially the overpopulation of pit bulls.
If you live in Minneapolis or St. Paul and would like to schedule an appointment for a FREE spay or neuter for your pit bull or Rottweiler, call 651-649-4451.

"I was looking for an apartment that I could live in with my pit bull, but the place that I found said that my dog had to be spayed before I could move in. The apartment manager gave me A Rotta Love Plus' information and I called them to get assistance with the surgery, because I couldn't afford it. ARLP set me up with an appointment and my dog and I will soon be moving into our new home!"  - Recent Get Your Fix! client

Our Philosophy
Get Your Fix! targets neighborhoods with an abundance of needs - where resources and financial means are not often available to spay, neuter, vaccinate, and microchip pit bulls and Rottweilers. The fairs are not just about altering pit bulls and Rottweilers, but about being a resource for a community in need of help and an advocate for dogs who face long odds of surviving. ARLP appreciates the opportunity to be present in the community, to make a direct impact on the Rottweilers and pit bulls in the Twin Cities and to establish long-term connections with their owners.

Get Your Fix! Fairs
GYF VaxIn addition to providing free spays and neuters throughout the year, during the summer months ARLP holds Get Your Fix! fairs, which provide additional services to Rottweilers and pit bulls:
  • free spays and neuters
  • free DHPP and rabies vaccinations ($5 donation suggested)
  • microchips for only $10
  • free, sturdy collars or leashes (in exchange for handing in old, fraying leashes/collars or heavy chains). High-quality collars and leashes reduce the number of runaways and strays that are picked up by Animal Control.
  • advice and owner support
In 2012, ARLP held 5 Get Your Fix! fairs.
2013 Spay/Neuter events dates are:

Feb 9th
Feb 26th
March 19th
April 13th
May 11th

Please check back for more dates.

Why should I spay or neuter my dog?

  • You want your dog to live a long and healthy life
  • You want to help reduce the pet overpopulation problem - every year a HUGE number of pit bulls are euthanized (put to sleep) or suffer as strays
  • Dogs that are spayed and neutered are easier to train, to control, and they maintain stable temperaments
  • Less mess - your spayed female will not go into heat
  • Save money - puppies are expensive
  • No more escape artists - neutered males are less likely to escape a home or yard in search of a female.
  • For more information, check out this excellent Fact Sheet from Even Chance rescue.
Your Support Makes Get Your Fix! Possible
Mikey GYF

"You all do a wonderful thing. I love my pups and you made it possible for my pit bull to get spayed and live a healthier life. Thank you all for what you do." - Pamela H., Get Your Fix! client
Individual donations are the lifeblood of ARLP's Get Your Fix! efforts. If you are able to donate to this effort, please visit our Razoo page. Your $50 donation will provide one spay or neuter surgery, the equivalent to saving the lives of about 53 dogs that would otherwise be born in unwanted litters, but any level of contribution is deeply appreciated. To those who have already contributed: YOU are responsible for the success of this program, and we are so very grateful.

                          September Newsletter 2012

As summer winds down, dogs and their owners look to enjoy the cooler weather, and the changing sights and sounds of the fall season. What are some tips to keeping your dog safe this fall:

1.  Fall hunting season poses a serious risk to dogs and owners, fall weather is perfect for hiking through the woods, exploring fallen leafs and colors.  Hunting is also popular during the same months.  Protect your dog by wearing bright colors, keep him on the trail by your side.

2. Halloween Festivities one of the most celebrated holidays in the USA.  Keep candy and treats away from your dog as many contain chocolate or other harmful ingredients.  Be sure to protect them from the scary sights and sounds, as well as from tricksters with ill-intentions.

3. Watch the Thanksgiving Buffet there are foods on the dinner table that are harmful for dogs.
They could get burnt if something gets dropped on them when dining with guests unused to his presence. Keep and eye out and warn holiday guests about your pets.

4. Becareful of camouflage during outings with your dog, fallen leaves make an impressive ground cover, they cover from sight the things that your dog's nose may not miss.  Poisonous mushrooms, snakes and small rodents preparing for winter,  Also glass or sharp rock.

5. Prepare back-to-school pet dangers, like crayons and markers.  You may have to adjust his walk time so he is not distracted by the bus stops and opportunities for him to bite or scratch a child.

6. Keep your dog away from burn hazards fall months bring cooler temperatures and the need for heat.  A fun, outdoor bonfire, or indoor fireplace or space heaters all pose burn risks for curious dogs.

7. Protect your dog from parasites year around, many of us think that September marks the end of flea and tick.  Veterinarians suggest year round protection and also protect your house fleas seek out satisfying, warm, winter homes.

8. Remember that dogs may experience extreme temperatures in the fall.  The fall is a combination of several weather types presented all in one day.  Make sure they have adequate water and shelter for outdoor dogs for all of the weather possibilities of fall.
